The Stallworth Bequest and Scholarships

In December, 2004 Mr. N. Jack Stallworth of Mobile gifted by will to the USA Foundation assets providing for tuition scholarships through the Foundation, for the benefit of USA students majoring in history, with an emphasis on southern history.

The Stallworth Scholarships include:

• The Montgomery Carlton Stallworth Endowed Scholarship (full tuition for the next academic year up to $3,500) Daniel Kalmar, 2021 Awardee  
• The Minnie Lee Wilkins Stallworth Endowed Scholarship (full tuition for the next academic year up to $3,500) Kennedy Reese, 2021 Awardee 

Mr. N. Jack Stallworth, a lifelong resident of Mobile, studied Forestry at Louisiana State University, co-founded America 's Junior Miss Program and the Mobile Camellia Ball, and was active in many businesses. In addition to the bequests mentioned above, Mr. Stallworth's gifts to the USA Foundation include his Springhill Avenue home, built in 1899, along with its contents, to be used for the benefit of the Foundation and the University. Assets to fund the maintenance of the home, scholarships, and lectureship are provided in the bequest.

The Department of History expresses sincere and lasting appreciation to Mr. Stallworth for his support of our academic program.

Macy Wims Reid Scholarship

The Department of History is pleased to be able to offer the Macy Wims Reid Endowed Scholarship for an outstanding junior or senior history major at the University of South Alabama.

The $1500 scholarship is made possible through the generosity Dr. Lois Wims, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Worcester State University in Massachusetts. Dr. Wims is the former Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at USA and the sister of Macy Wims Reid.

Mahan-Brandon Gender Studies Research Fund

The USA Gender Studies Program is pleased to announce the Mahan-Brandon Fund for Research in Gender Studies and Women's History.  This funding opportunity is open to all tenured and tenure-track faculty as well as undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Arts & Sciences. This fund was established by the late Dr. Howard Mahan, founding chair of the USA History Department and his wife, Dr. Betty Brandon, Professor Emerita of History at USA, as well as the USA Foundation which matched their gift.  The generosity of Dr. Mahan and Dr. Brandon, and the USA Foundation will allow faculty and students in the College of Arts & Sciences to gain additional support for their endeavors in the fields of Gender Studies and Women's History.

The Mahan-Brandon Fund is intended to support faculty research, teaching, and professional development for those faculty members whose research and teaching focuses upon and/or includes any aspect of gender, sexuality, or women's history.  Awards will be determined through a competitive process of proposal submission and evaluated by the Gender Studies Committee, an interdisciplinary A&S committee.  Depending upon the number and nature of applications received, awards of up to $4000 may be granted.  Some examples of activities to be funded include, but are not limited to, research travel, professional development travel, research material, assistance with research, equipment, copyright and image costs. 

For undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Arts & Sciences, awards will be determined through a competitive process of proposal submission.  Depending upon the number and nature of applications received, awards of up to $1000 may be granted.  Some examples of activities to be funded include, but are not limited to, research travel, research material, assistance in attending a conference or other professional opportunities related to gender and/or women’s history.
