Phi Alpha Theta
Welcome to the international history honor society, Phi Alpha Theta , and the University
of South Alabama's Rho Theta chapter of Phi Alpha Theta .
What is Phi Alpha Theta?
Phi Alpha Theta is an international history honor and professional society whose mission
is to promote the study of history, superior teaching and research, publication of
such research, and the exchange of ideas among all students of history. History majors
and non-majors are invited to become members at any time provided applicants meet
the academic requirements outlined below. As a Phi Alpha Theta member for life, you
are entitled to all of its privileges, including eligibility for academic awards offered
through the organization.
In addition, Phi Alpha Theta offers conferences, workshops, and programs nationally
which you may attend. You will also receive the quarterly journal, The Historian ,
which is included with your initiation fee and is renewable every year thereafter.
The University of South Alabama chapter offers several events over the course of the
academic year, such as a fall induction program, and in spring, in conjunction with
the History Department Awards ceremony, the History Professor of the Year Award as
well as various cash and book prizes to outstanding History majors and students.
Finally, throughout the year, Phi Alpha Theta invites speakers and offers a variety
of workshops with notable historians in all fields. Events sponsored by the USA chapter
of Phi Alpha Theta are posted throughout the Humanities Building as well as campus.
Membership Application
In order to join Phi Alpha Theta you must meet the following requirements:
Undergraduate Students
- A minimum of 12 hours credit in History
- GPA of 3.00 or better in History
- GPA of 3.00 or better for 2/3 of all non-History courses
Graduate Students
- A minimum of 1/3 residence requirement for the M.A.
- GPA of 3.5 or better with no grade lower than a "B"
Interested applicants may obtain an application in the History Department Office,
