Application

Welcome to the online application for the NSF-REU Site: Bioarchaeology of Bronze Age Social Systems.  This REU program supports the training of undergraduate students in conducting collaborative research alongside an interdisciplinary group of scientists over an eight-week period.  Research projects focus on the bioarchaeological analysis of two skeletal collections from the United Arab Emirates dating to the Umm an-Nar period (2700-2000 BCE) – a transformative era characterized by major shifts in mortuary practices, subsistence strategies, and social organization – in order to examine the socioeconomic and environmental circumstances impacting local communities in southeastern Arabia.

With support from the National Science Foundation, this REU Site is jointly run by the University of South Alabama and Quinnipiac University. Student travel, housing, field trip fees, and some meals will be covered by the REU in addition to a $500/week stipend.

Eight REU fellows in total will be selected for the REU program.  Accepted students will have one week to officially accept the offer.  Two alternates will also be chosen should a finalist not respond by the stated deadline or is no longer able to attend.

**PLEASE NOTE: **The Bioarchaeology of Bronze Age Social Systems NSF-REU Site was completed in 2024, and is no longer accepting applications.**

Note on COVID-19: We want to ensure a safe summer program, and are working with the University of South Alabama and under CDC guidelines to follow COVID-19 policies as they change in response to local and national conditions. Students accepted into the program will receive regular updates about the status of the program and the specific safety parameters in place in the months prior to their arrival.  Should it become unsafe to meet in person, the program will be cancelled.
