Master's in English
Students pursuing a master's in English at the University of South Alabama interact with award-winning creative writers, literature scholars, and composition and rhetoric specialists in one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the American South. Students can choose from concentrations in the areas of creative writing and literature. Enjoy small class sizes and mentoring from a one-of-a-kind faculty in the Department of English, home to the Stokes Center for Creative Writing. Assistantships and scholarships are available.
Careers in English
With both a creative writing concentration and a literature concentration, students can pursue a master's in English at South to further career and creative goals, as well as prepare for doctoral study. The master’s in English prepares students for careers in junior college or secondary-school teaching, as well as writing and editing in the corporate or non-profit community. Through classes, assistantships, and internships, students build skills in critical reading and writing, research, and instruction that support a range of career fields in business and education.

The Graduate Assistantship program gives students financial support as they develop critical career skills in teaching and research. Assistants currently receive an $8,000 academic-year stipend and a tuition waiver for up to 10 semester credit hours each fall and spring of the appointment in return for working in a departmental position that focuses on teaching or research.
