USA Department of Family Medicine

Our goal is to train excellent family physicians and in so doing, significantly improve the delivery of healthcare to needful communities by providing them with competent doctors, well-trained in all aspects of family care from pregnancy and newborn care through geriatrics. As a teaching facility, we offer a wide range of services with the most up-to-date trends in family medicine. We specialize in complete medical care for all patients, regardless of age, race, or medical complaint. We treat the whole lifespan, the whole family, the whole community.

Chair's Welcome Message

Ehab Molokhia, M.D., MPH Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine at the University of South Alabama. Our mission is to provide both patients and healthcare learners with the resources and support they need to improve health through patient-centered, population-driven care.

Founded in 1972, the USA Family Medicine Residency has a distinguished history of training family physicians who are well-prepared to deliver comprehensive and safe care across diverse settings. Since our first graduating class in 1974, we have remained dedicated to developing physicians who embody the principles of Family Medicine and who are equipped to meet the evolving healthcare needs of the communities they serve.

Our clinical services are centered in Midtown Mobile, where our faculty and residents provide care to more than 13,000 patients. We are privileged to serve individuals and families across the lifespan, offering continuity of care that spans pediatrics, adult medicine, maternity care, and geriatrics. In addition to primary care, our department integrates specialized services in sports medicine, clinical pharmacy, and behavioral health, enhancing the breadth of expertise available to our patients.

Since assuming the role of Program Director in 2012 and Interim Chair in 2023, I have been dedicated to strengthening both the academic mission of the department and our service to the state of Alabama. Our residency provides extensive community medicine experiences and supports advanced training in obstetrics through a dedicated fellowship aimed at improving maternal and women’s health in underserved communities. We prioritize the recruitment of learners with a commitment to practicing in Alabama, particularly in areas of greatest need.

Our educational philosophy reflects the principles outlined in the Future of Family Medicine and the AAFP Transformed Project. We emphasize the integration of advanced primary care models with core values such as mindful communication, cultural humility, whole-person care, and longitudinal patient relationships. Additionally, our training prepares learners to excel in areas of practice management, care coordination, quality improvement, and team-based care, ensuring readiness for 21st-century healthcare practice.

We invite you to explore our department and its programs, whether as a prospective resident, medical student, or partner in care. Together, we continue to advance the mission of improving health outcomes and training the next generation of family physicians for Alabama and beyond.

Sincerely,
Ehab Molokhia, M.D., MPH
