Resident Wellness

Dauphin Island near Mobile, Alabama One of the most important factors of resident wellness is the work schedule. The Emergency Medicine Residency Program is a small program, but we take great care each month with the ED schedule to ensure an equitable distribution of requested days off and preferences for night shifts. Our faculty are incredibly receptive to assisting with issues that may arise in a resident’s personal or professional life.

Being active and getting fresh air are important to ensuring a healthy body and mind. Our residents can enjoy the outdoors year-round, as Mobile usually has mild winters. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta has 48,000 acres to explore and provides numerous areas for camping, hunting, fishing, kayaking and canoeing. The residency program leads wilderness expeditions in the delta, and the medical school offers a wilderness course.

Downtown Mobile boasts a variety of craft breweries and local restaurants featuring fresh Gulf seafood, Southern fare and world-class cuisine. After their shifts, residents enjoy grabbing meals together and walking around our eclectic downtown.

One of the biggest advantages of our location is our proximity to some of the Gulf Coast’s most beautiful beaches, including Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Pensacola Beach and Destin. Our residents regularly enjoy relaxing trips to the beach on their days off.

Our residents also participate in a variety of activities such as Journal Club, hosted at an attending’s house each month.
