Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Communication!

Our department is a vibrant community where curiosity, creativity, and real-world experience come together. We offer undergraduate programs in advertising & public relations, communication studies, digital film & television production, and multimedia & broadcast journalism. You’ll find opportunities to grow, explore your interests, and get ready for life after graduation.

One of the things I’m most proud of our faculty is that they bring a great mix of professional experience and academic expertise to the classroom, and they truly care about helping students succeed. They understand how important strong communication skills are in every field, and they’re committed to giving you the confidence and know-how to stand out.

Even beyond the classroom, you’ll have plenty of chances to put what you learn into practice through internships and our student media group, JagMedia. You can write for Due South, report for The Vanguard, produce TV shows for JagTV, or create programs for the Prowl radio. These hands-on experiences are a great way to build your portfolio, gain confidence, and discover what really excites you.

At the graduate level, our department gives you the chance to dive deeper into communication theory and research. You’ll work closely with faculty on projects in areas like media psychology, social media, health communication, interpersonal and organizational communication, media effect and more. These experiences help you build a strong foundation for academia, professional, and research careers.
