Message from the Chair

Our department offers undergraduate programs in advertising and public relations, communication studies, digital film and television production, and journalism (broadcast and multimedia). Through our course offerings, we try to reach the right balance of practical, professional, and theoretical experience in coursework for our students to graduate ready for the workplace. Our new undergraduate certificate in Diversity and Cultural Competence is another way we can help our students be more competitive in their fields.

Our faculty have a balance of professional experience in their fields in addition to advanced academic degrees. They understand the ability to communicate effectively is essential no matter what industry you work in. They are also focused on providing our students with the skills, background, and experiences to assist them in obtaining meaningful employment after graduation.

Students have the opportunity to apply the skills learned in the classroom through internships. Additionally, as members of the student media group, JagMedia, students can hone their feature writing skills as writers for the university cultural magazine Due South, report on news in The Vanguard, gain on-air experience or create and produce a television show for Jag TV, or produce radio programs for The Prowl.

The graduate program integrates theoretical and research components of mass, interpersonal, and organizational communication. Students have an opportunity to learn from faculty who conduct research in journalism history, public memory, media and consumer psychology, social media, media effects, and public speaking anxiety.

We invite you to join us!
