Campus Recycling

REcycle South Truck

Recycle South

Recycling is important to the University of South Alabama and to the mission of the Sustainability Committee. Safety and Environmental Compliance, working together with Facilities Services, collects recyclables around campus 2-3 times a week and collects approximately 80,000 pounds per month! We recycle a variety of materials including paper, cardboard, plastic, aluminum, glass, batteries, motor oil and ink cartridges. Our program has expanded over the last few years to included almost, if not all, buildings on campus. As important as recycling is, remember that reducing and reusing are as important as recycling when it comes to environmental stewardship. Here’s how you can do your part to keep our campus green!

Plastic Bottles and Aluminum Cans

Plastic Bottle Recycle Bin

Look for the blue recycle bins when disposing of plastic bottles and aluminum cans. If there is food waste in your recyclable trash, it will be rejected, so be sure to “chug it before you chunk it!”

Paper

Paper on desk

Look for the blue bins specific to paper usually located near a copier or in the hallways of many classroom buildings. Be proactive when considering paper usage by copying on both sides of the page or living a paper-less lifestyle.

Ink

Ink Cartridges

Ink jet printer cartridges and laser toner cartridges can be recycled. Some manufacturers provided packaging to return individual empty cartridges, but you can take that good deed one step further. Look for blue bins marked for collection of used cartridges, and we will send them back in bulk rather than sending them one at a time.

Reusable Water Bottle

Reusable Water Bottle

Recycling a plastic water bottle is great, but drinking from a reusable water bottle is even better! Look for water bottle fillers around campus, and reduce waste by bringing your own (reusable) bottle.

Moving Boxes

Moving Boxes at Move in Day

We already know that there will be tons (literally) of cardboard on move in day, and we are ready! Facilities Services will be parked in front of Azalea and Camellia Halls, collecting your cardboard boxes for recycling. Volunteers will be combing the halls on move in day to collect your recyclable trash. You can help, too, by breaking down your boxes and separating any plastic or Styrofoam from the cardboard.
