USA Joins Housing First to Connect Local Homeless Clients to Service Providers
Posted on January 27, 2015
More than 300 students, faculty and staff are needed to “get involved and give back” to Project Homeless Connect on Friday, Jan. 30, at Mobile’s Greater Gulf State Fairgrounds, located at 1035 Cody Road North.
Project Homeless Connect will provide the USA community an opportunity to spend time with about 200 members of our community who are in need of housing. The University and Housing First, Inc., will collaborate to offer a variety of services for individuals, focusing especially on those who need health and medical care.
“Participating and collaborating with the community is making a difference for students learning to work as an inter-professional team while improving the health and wellness of our most vulnerable individuals,” said Dr. Margaret Moore-Nadler, assistant professor in the department of community mental health in the USA College of Nursing and board member for the Continuum of Care Committee for Mobile and Baldwin counties with Housing First. “The contribution from volunteers is impressive from the University and community, but we need more help.”
Moore-Nadler has worked with some University faculty for the past two years to provide a comprehensive health and wellness clinic at the USA Student Run Free Clinic at 15 Place, which links services with the Mobile County Health Department and Franklin Memorial Healthcare for the local homeless community. They have also worked with Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy, AltaPointe Health Systems and Alabama Cares.
In preparation for the event, volunteers will need to log on to USA Online to complete
a short training course at ecampus.southalabama.edu. For online training assistance, email Moore-Nadler at mmoore-nadler@southalabama.edu
